Afghan Biscuits

SUNDAY DESSERT #58: Afghan Biscuit

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: New Zealand 🇳🇿

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: I was looking up popular desserts from New Zealand and this caught my attention. Since I've never had these before, I thought I'd give them a go.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Depending on what part of the world you're from, you may call a cookie a biscuit or vice versa. And, contrary to the name, these biscuits did not originate from Afghanistan. There are several theories as to where the name came from. One such theory is that the cookie is supposed to look like the dusty, rocky terrain of Afghanistan. Another theory states that these cookies were made by the wives of the New Zealander soldiers fighting in the Second Afghan War. They used what little rations they could find and put them together to make a tasty treat. But, no one really knows the exact reason why these mysterious chocolatey treasures were given this name. It is certain, however, that Afghan Biscuits are well known and enjoyed by the Kiwis.

Chocolate, corn flakes, flour, butter, and sugar are all it takes to bake up these biscuits. But the cookie dough, man. I could eat that by itself! It's like fudge heaven. And there are no eggs in it, so it's completely safe --- not that eggs in cookie dough would ever stop me from eating it anyway. 😋 Top the whole thing off with some chocolate icing and a walnut and you are sure to have a little party in your mouth!

It's rich, crunchy, and chocolatey. I absolutely adore these biscuits and highly recommend them! I gave them a 9/10.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Yes! And honestly, I would make them again just for the sinfully delightful cookie dough!
