Alfajores

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

SUNDAY DESSERT #3: Alfajores

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Argentina (but also popular throughout all of Latin America) 🇦🇷

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: Although this recipe is not originally from Colombia, Disney's Encanto made me want to try something popular from South America.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Ok, so I have to divide this cookie into categories; the cookie, the dulce de leche, and then the alfajore as a whole.

The actual cookie part was like a sugar cookie/shortbread combo! Oh my thick-cotton-candy-like-melt-in-your-mouth-Argentinian goodness!!! So easy to make and by far a 10 out of 10 for my personal taste (9/10 for the chocolate dipped though...I'm a vanilla purist).

Now, let's talk dulce de leche. It is super easy to make from scratch, but very time consuming. And this creamy goodness is sweet. Like, EXCESSIVELY sweet. Because it has a sugar level like caramel on steroids, I would rate it a 7/10. Also, I recommend just buying a can of the pre-made stuff to save time since people say it tastes exactly the same.

For the alfajore as a whole sandwich, the first bite is INCREDIBLE! But after that, I felt like my body was going into a diabetic coma. Alright, that's a total exaggeration. But really, these cookies are ridiculously sweet. Fun fact, in Argentina they drink bitter black coffee with these cookies to cut the sweetness. Makes sense! Overall, I'd give the first bite a 10/10 and then the rest a 8/10.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? The dulce? Maybe. The cookie? Heck to the yeah!!! The sandwich? Sure! For special events like Christmas.
