Chess Pie

SUNDAY DESSERT #94: Chess Pie

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: United Kingdom 🇬🇧

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: I just wanted to test out a new pie I've never had before and hopefully add it to our future Thanksgiving dessert spread. 🦃 🥧

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Although the origins of this pie are probably British, it is very popular in the southern United States. There are a couple of stories as to how it got its name. It was either called Chest Pie or Just Pie and the southern accent made it sound like "Chess" Pie. (And unless you already have one, I bet you are practicing that accent right now to test that out. I sure did!)

Whatever the real name, the truth is it's a great pie! Simple too. Sweet, custardy filling getting baked up in a homemade pie crust is bound to be tasty. A little cornmeal added to the custard helps the top caramalize making it crisp and chewy; a perfect texture to complement the moist cream underneath. 10/10 and a two thumbs up for the Thanksgiving dessert table!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? *said with a southern accent* "Oh yes! Oh my! Please pass the chess pie!" 😊 To my fellow American friends, Happy Thanksgiving!
