SUNDAY DESSERT #38: Gizzada Tart
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Jamaica šÆš² (but maybe Portugal šµš¹)
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy
INSPIRATION: A tart that's filled with sugar and spice?! What a wonderful way to bring in October with the flavors of Autumntime. šš
RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: The story goes that gizzada tart was first introduced to Jamaicans when Jewish-Portuguese immigrants fled to the Caribbean for religious freedom. As a result, debates exist about whether the origins of this dessert are from Portugal or Jamaica. But whether you believe it is the Portuguese 'queijada' or Jamaican 'gizzada', I'm sure we can all agree that it is a tasty treat worthy of autumn celebration!
Gizzada, a.k.a. Pinch-Me-Round, is made with butter, brown sugar, coconut, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cloves, and ginger. The mix is then placed into a sweet tart crust that has been pinched into a shell round - hence the name - and then baked. (Bonus points for not having to par-bake the shell beforehand. Just a one and done!)
You guys. Oh, you guys. When those tarts are baking, it makes the whole house smell like fall. It's better than a scented candle! Before I even tasted it, I knew this was gonna be good based on the aroma alone! And the taste was equal to the scent! It's texture was like a chewy oatmeal cookie but had the flavor of spiced pecan pie. Oh my goodness. So delicious! Jared and I both agreed on a 10/10! This is our new favorite dessert for Autumn. š
WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Uh...yes!
