SUNDAY DESSERT #82: Koláče (Kolache)
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Czechia a.k.a. Czech Republic 🇨🇿
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate
INSPIRATION: I was looking up European desserts and came across this one. I had to give it a go!
RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Kolache (pronounced "koh-lah-chuh") are these fluffy, sweet dough pastries filled with either a fruit or dessert cheese filling. In Czechia, they are customarily filled with prune or poppy seed jellies and sprinkled with streusel. For mine, I did an assortment of sweet cream cheese, blackberry jam, and apricot jelly.
If you don't like overly sweet desserts, than these are for you! It has the taste and texture of a lightly sweetened dinner roll. The streusel and filling on top gives it a slightly sweeter edge, but not by much. I'd consider these more of a snack than a dessert; albeit a really pretty snack perfect for a teatime treat. As such, we rated it a 6/10.
WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Yes and no. If I hosted a party then I would use these as a beautiful appetizer or sampler. Would I serve it for a dessert? Absolutely not.
