Krémes

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

SUNDAY DESSERT #15: Krémes (pronounced 'cray-mesh')

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Hungary 🇭🇺

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate

INSPIRATION: I just randomly picked Hungary and researched some of their most popular desserts. This one came up pretty frequently as a top choice so I thought I'd try it.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: The cream in this dessert has several "layers". It's a vanilla custard base with egg white meringue, gelatin, and stiff whipped cream gently folded in. The top and bottom layers are basic puff pastry. I gave it an intermediate rating because even though it's pretty simple to make, it does require a bit of time and know how to get all the parts ready separately to put together. However, it's worth the work!! It tastes like thick tapioca cream pudding with a flaky crust. Yum! This creamy goodness deserves a 9/10. However, I did use store-bought frozen puff pastry dough to save on time. Next time, I'll make it from scratch and I think that would bump this delight up to a 10.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Sure! I'm already "Hungary" for more! (Sorry...I couldn't resist 😅)
