Maandazi

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

SUNDAY DESSERT #27: Maandazi

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Swahili Coast 🇰🇪 🇹🇿 (Kenya, Tanzania)

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: Who wouldn't want a good African doughnut? I sure wanted to try it!

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Maandazi are the African equivalent of French beignets. They taste like rich scones! The recipe calls for coconut milk and cardamom in the dough, but after my horrible run in with cardamom in the besan ladoo I made from India, I decided to swap it out with cinnamon instead. So it's probably not as authentic as it should be, but at least I know my family will eat it without gagging. 😂 Maandazi can be served plain, with powder sugar, honey, or any dipping sauces like chocolate or caramel. Any and all options are fantastic! It makes a yummy and festive breakfast option too! 9/10!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Yes I would!
