Marquesa de Chocolate

SUNDAY DESSERT #68: Marquesa de Chocolate

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Venezuela 🇻🇪

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: Sometimes you just need a good chocolate fix. Thank you Merry B. for the suggestion!

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Although technically invented by the French as the Marquise au Chocolat, the Marquesa is a most beloved, adopted dessert by the Venezuelan people. Basically a dessert lasagna, it is made with Maria cookies soaked in chocolate milk. These are then placed between layers of thick, delectable, chocolatey cream made with sweetened condensed milk and lemon juice. (The lemon helps to curdle the milk making it thick and delicious like pudding). It's simple with no baking necessary! This would be a perfect choice to make for absolute beginners or kids.

The beauty of the Marquesa is that you can make it as chocolatey as you'd like! I absolutely prefer the subtle bitterness of dark chocolate. As such, I used dark chocolate pieces as a top garnish. Adding a bit more cocoa powder to the cream also serves to give the Marquesa as a whole that unique edge of flavor that is equally balanced between rich and tart; a tribute to dark chocolate itself! For milk chocolate lovers, simply scale back on the powder and add milk chocolate pieces instead for a sweet and mild flavor...which would definitely be delicious too, even if it is a little more boring. Can you tell that I am completely biased? 😉😂

We liked this! It's chocolatey, creamy, and slightly tangy from the lemon juice. It does have a fairly simple flavor profile though so we gave it a 7/10.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? I would! I also think this is one of those desserts that would pair well with a side of ice cream. 😋
