Mooncakes

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

SUNDAY DESSERT #1: Mooncakes!

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: China - typically eaten during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival 🇨🇳

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy, but very time consuming and requires special ingredients and equipment

INSPIRATION: My daughter is obsessed with the Netflix movie 'Over the Moon' and has been begging me to make mooncakes. Also, I highly recommend listening to the mooncake song from the movie soundtrack while whipping up these babies.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Traditionally, these mooncakes are filled with red bean or lotus seed paste and a salted duck egg yolk. So to ease our way into trying new foods, I used more familiar fillings and instead filled half a batch with honey pistachio and the other half with almond paste. The honey pistachio was good, but the almond paste ones were a BIG hit with our family including our 3 year old! I would give them a 7 out of 10 on taste. Plus they are just so beautiful!!!!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN?: Yes!! I think I'll make these again every September during the MidAutumn Festival with the more traditional Chinese flavors
