Mustikkapiirakka

SUNDAY DESSERT #28: Mustikkapiirakka

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Finland 🇫🇮

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: A cross between a tart and a cheesecake, this blueberry treat just screams summertime!

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: In Europe, there's this thing called a bilberry. No, that's not a typo. It's a smaller, cousin variety of our American blueberry. Anyway, the original recipe uses bilberry. Since I am not ambitious enough to have bilberries imported to my home, I substituted with blueberries instead. Boring, I know.

The crust is a cookie-like mixture of rye and all-purpose flour and the filling around the blueberries is sour cream, egg, vanilla, and cardamom. I was so hesitant to add the cardamom, but I thought I'd give it one more chance since so many baked goods call for it. I'm glad I did because it really compliments the blueberry flavor but there's not so much that it overpowers it.

I like blueberry pie ok, but the Finns have really stepped up their game with this and made it the stuff of dreams! It's not overly sweet and there is a hint of tang from the sour cream. Overall, it's just a properly balanced dessert in terms of flavor, sweetness, and acidity. Straight up 10/10! If you ever have fresh blueberries lying around that you're not sure how to use up, this dessert is totally worth a try.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? A dessert that's just as fun to make and eat as it is to pronounce? Yes, please!
