Neenish Tart

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

SUNDAY DESSERT #33: Neenish Tart

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Australia 🇦🇺

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate

INSPIRATION: Watching the Australian show 'Bluey' with my daughter always makes me want to try new Australian things. Since I've already made Pavlova, Neenish Tart seemed like the next iconic choice.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Neenish tart is a sweet tart shell filled with raspberry jam, mock cream, and then piped with half chocolate/half pink (sometimes white) royal icing. Sort of like an Aussie version of a half moon cookie.

What the heckers is mock cream? It's a mix of butter, sugar, milk, vanilla, and gelatin and the result is a creamy texture that looks and tastes like honey butter. Mmmmm!

Creamy, tangy, crunchy. Pretty good overall! We rated this one a 7/10 because even though it tasted great (especially the first bite), it was excessively sweet. I love me a rich dessert but this one was almost too rich. Finishing a whole tart was a sugar overload for me...and that's saying something!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Probably not unless I experimented to cut the sweetness and amp up the raspberry flavor.
