Pampoen Koekies

SUNDAY DESSERT 89: Pampoen Koekies

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: South Africa 🇿🇦

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: Another fried, doughnut-like dessert but this time...it's pumpkin spiced! Perfect for October.

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: I am going to suspend with the suspense and tell you straight up that these are a 10/10. Maybe even an 11! I am super picky about my doughnuts, but these are by far one of the BEST I've ever had!!

Pampoen Koekies in Afrikaans literally translates to Pumpkin Cookies. I would say these are more like fritters than cookies, but whatever the name, they are easy and incredibly delicious!

So you take a bit of pumpkin-spiced batter and drop it by spoonfuls into hot oil and watch the magic as they puff and crisp up. And if your taste buds weren't already dancing after eating them plain, you level it up with some drizzled caramel sauce and....oh....there are not even words!!! Well, there are words, but I think it is best described with blunt adjectives. Pumpkin-y, spiced, light, airy, soft, crispy, sweet, savory, and melt-in-your-mouth goodness! My husband and I had a mutual appreciation moment in the kitchen as we savored these lovelies. It was a divinely aperitive experience!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? My husband has requested these for his upcoming birthday breakfast! And besides that, I am going to be making these every autumn for my entire lifetime!!
