Plum Puffs

SUNDAY DESSERT #92: Marilla's Plum Puffs

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Canada 🇨🇦 (Although, technically, I'm sure it was actually passed down from France.)

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate

INSPIRATION: At least once a year, I read and/or watch Anne of Green Gables (which I just finished again last week). It is one of my favorite book series of all time! If you're familiar with the story, then you'll know that these plum puffs come straight from "Marilla's kitchen" on Prince Edward Island. It never occurred to me to make them until now!

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: The "puff" part of this dessert is a basic pâte à choux dough. You know, the stuff used to make éclair and profiterole shells. You then fill them with plum preserves and whipped cream.

Since I couldn't find preserves of the plum variety ANYWHERE, I was forced to test my skills and make my own. So I simmered a few mashed plums with some sugar and lemon juice until reduced and thick and....BAM...plum jam! 😄 And it is SO GOOD! I didn't think I could love anything more than peach jam, but plum jam is infinitely better! It's kind of like crack of the preserves world. I HIGHLY recommend trying it sometime if you haven't had it before.

"Oh Marilla! Look at the puffs!" (In reference to the dough puffs, not the sleeves.) A light, airy shell filled with exquisite plum jam and whipped cream? It tastes just as good as it sounds...delectable! It is very sweet but not overly so because it is balanced with the "egginess" of the pâte à choux. So such has scored a perfect 10! Honestly, the plum preserves do all the work. It's gonna be good with that stuff on it!!

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Yes! And I'm so glad that my imagining of what Marilla's famous plum puffs taste like has become an actual reality! After all, "It's delightful when your imaginations come true, isn't it?"
