SUNDAY DESSERT #13: Qatayef Asafiri
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Levant region
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy
INSPIRATION: Ramadan! This Islamic dessert is a classic treat eaten during the nighttime festivities.
RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Kinda looks like a stuffed pancake, right? And it is! It's a yeasty semolina pancake that is only cooked on one side. The uncooked side acts as a seal to create that funky cone shape. You can fill the cone with anything, but traditionally it is filled with marscapone, mixed nuts, ashta, or pastry cream. I chose pastry cream and pistachios with a drizzle of honey on top.
It really doesn't look like anything special, but in this case, looks are deceiving. It was SO GOOD! The cake has such a unique taste. Sort of a mix between a regular pancake and a crêpe. The cream and pistachios give it both a sweet and savory flavor profile. Such a pleasant and unexpected taste experience!! We all gave it a 9/10.
WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Absolutely! Breakfast dessert anyone?
