Shoofly Pie

SUNDAY DESSERT #85: Shoofly Pie

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: America đŸ‡ș🇾

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy

INSPIRATION: Whenever autumn comes around, I like to reminisce about my childhood on the East coast with all its lovely colors and seasonal traditions. When we lived in Westfield, NY we were fairly close to the Amish communities. That's where we learned that this Dutch Pennsylvanian dessert is a standard favorite among the Amish, though we never actually tasted it. I thought it would be the perfect selection to try for this fall season!

RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: The name sounds gross and unusual, but there are no actual flies in the pie. Let me just clear that up. 😅 The filling is a molasses custard and because it is so sweet and sticky, you would, theoretically, be swatting and shooing away flies from your attractive pie. Hence the namesake.

On top of this gooey custard is a layer of Dutch streusel topping. You guys...streusel is a downfall of mine. If a dessert has a nice crumbly, crunchy, buttery streusel, I'm probably not going to restrain myself from eating the whole dish.

And the verdict? It's delicious! 9/10! It tastes like a cross between a gingerbread cookie and a pecan pie. Sounds amazing, no? Well it is! But it is very much on the richer side of the dessert spectrum so it needs to be eaten in small amounts, despite the mouth-watering streusel topper.

WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? Uh huh. And this is another pie for the Thanksgiving collection. It is absolutely perfect for any fall festive occasion! 🍂🍁
