SUNDAY DESSERT #42: Tres Leches Cake
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Mexico 🇲🇽
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy-Intermediate
INSPIRATION: Halloween and DÃa de Los Muertos season is upon us! We need to light some candles, watch Coco, and eat tres leches to celebrate! 💀
RECEPTION/COMMENTARY: Tres leches, or 'three milks', cake is made with cream, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk. A vanilla sponge cake absorbs the milk syrup and then gets topped with a thick layer of lightly sweetened whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon. It's simple, it's sweet, it's ultra moist. But, in my humble opinion, it lacks pizzazz and flavor. Just lightly sweetened milky cake. Kinda boring and bland. I mean, it's not terrible and I will definitely eat it but it's nothing to holler about, either. I gave it a rating of 6/10. Jared thinks I'm crazy. Perhaps you do, too. Maybe I am. 🤪😅 He gave it an 8/10.
WOULD I MAKE IT AGAIN? You know, I've been contemplating. This cake has potential. I would only make it again if I swapped out the sweetened condensed milk for dulce de leche. I think the caramel-like sweetness would give this dessert the oomph of flavor it needs to bump it up to a 7 or 8 for me.
